The Walnut Creek Barnes & Noble ASD parent support group meeting is from 7-9 pm, the 2nd Monday of each month.
Topic: CASE, Community Alliance for Special Education

Guest speaker: Attorney, Joseph Feldman

The Community Alliance for Special Education (CASE) was formed in 1979 to protect the lawful educational rights of children with disabilities by fostering the fair and just implementation of IDEA and state special education law. CASE advocacy staff, thoroughly trained in special education law, helps families and school districts work together when designing appropriate special education programs for students with disabilities, who are at risk for school failure, so they can succeed in school, get a job and become productive members of their community.

CASE provides these basic services:

  • Technical assistance consultations to families and professionals on special education rights, responsibilities and services regarding specific special education students or issues;
  • Direct representation at Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings, due process mediations, and administrative hearings if necessary on behalf of students with disabilities and their parents; and,
  • Training on special education rights and services to parents so they to can better advocate for appropriate special education programs and services on behalf of children with disabilities.

CASE supports families by going with them to IEP meetings as a primary service. The CASE service model is based on the premise that the special education process is first and foremost an educational process. It should be collaborative, non-adversarial and student oriented. CASE methods empower parents so that they can effectively advocate for their children in the educational process. CASE services strive to prevent disagreements between parents and school districts from escalating to the need for court intervention. For more info visit: http://www.caseadvocacy.org/

This parents group meets at 7 pm on the second Monday of each month - upstairs in Barnes & Noble in Walnut Creek on N. Main Street. Further speaker information will be updated on this web site. http://www.AspergersResource.org

New Evidence-Based Book Finally Here: A Politically Incorrect Look at Evidence-Based Practices and Teaching Social Skills

A Literature Review and Discussion by Michelle Garcia Winner
10% off until May 23

"A must read - Michelle challenges professionals and caregivers to think more deeply, and practice more consciously, in helping individuals with ASD to acquire and apply social-knowledge in their lives. In building on her seminal work in social thinking, Michelle argues effectively for an important and more thoughtful alternative to behaviorally-based social skill 'training' approaches, which are so limited in honoring the complexity of individuals with ASD".
Barry M. Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Brown University

"A compelling tour with a long overdue destination! With some of the most difficult questions surrounding the social challenges in ASD as a point of departure, Michelle charts an informed rationale for social learning strategies. Dispelling myths in-the-way of social understanding, she connects behavior to thought, mistakes to insight, and confusion to direction. This is a trip worth taking! After reading this article, I reconsidered its title. Sadly, I have to admit that it often is politically incorrect to step back, think, and work to ensure that what we do makes sense in light of what we know. That being the case, Michelle is definitely a valuable charter member of a small, politically incorrect club of educators in the field of ASD. New perspectives are the forgotten half of change; this article organizes the thinking that creates exciting 'unexpected' opportunities for people with ASD."

Each camper attends regular groups with Dr. Field as part of the summer program. During the school year, Dr. Field maintains a full-time private practice providing diagnostic assessments and therapy to children, adolescents and adults. We are now just 6 weeks away from the 6 annual PAR 4 Kids' Sake Golf

participated in the past as well as those joining us for the first time.

The live and silent auctions are shaping up to be as good as ever with
vacations to the Cayman Islands, Antigua, St. Lucia, Hawaii, and

57' motor yacht, a signed Andre Agassi ball and racket, a helicopter ride
with KGO's traffic reporter, and beautiful jewelry. One of the most
exciting items this year will be a true air-to-air combat mission where
you take the stick and engage in aerial dogfighting. Keep an eye on our
