Lesher Speaker Series Presents;

James Lovell and Gene Kranz

Captain James Lovell
NASA Legend and Apollo 13 Commander

Captain James Lovell, Jr. was chosen in September 1962 for the space program following extensive experience as a naval aviator and test pilot. Lovell executed various commands in the Gemini Mission Program, including serving as backup pilot for the Gemini 4 flight, and pilot on the history-making Gemini 7 flight that saw the first rendezvous of two manned spacecraft in 1965. He was also the backup commander for the Gemini 9 flight, and in 1966 he commanded the Gemini 12 spacecraft to successfully conclude the Gemini Program.

At the close of the Gemini program, Lovell became command module pilot and navigator for the epic six-day journey on Apollo 8, humanity’s maiden voyage to the moon, during which he and his fellow crew were the first humans to leave the earth’s gravitational influence. He then was backup commander to Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. His fourth and final flight was on the perilous Apollo 13 mission in 1970. As spacecraft commander, he and his crew successfully modified their lunar module into an effective lifeboat when their cryogenic oxygen system failed. Their emergency activation and operation of the lunar module systems conserved both electrical power and water in sufficient supply to ensure their survival in space and their safe return to Earth.

In 1973, Lovell left the space program to join the Bay-Houston Towing Company. He became president and chief executive officer of Bay-Houston Towing in 1975 and then joined Fisk Telephone Systems as company president. The company was acquired by the Centel Corporation in 1980, and he became executive vice president. Today, he is president of Lovell Communications, a business devoted to disseminating information about the US space program.

Lesher Speaker Series

Laura Bush
Laura Bush, one of the most popular first ladies in history, is a compelling advocate for issues of national and global concern.

One of America’s most popular First Ladies, Mrs. Laura W. Bush discusses her life and shares a compelling voice for helping those in need. Speaking passionately about education, literacy, volunteerism, human rights and the issues of global importance she championed in the White House, Mrs. Bush captures presidential life in the harrowing days and weeks after 9/11. She discusses her experience on the world stage: serving as one of the first U.S. representatives to visit war-torn Afghanistan, reaching out to disease-stricken African nations, tirelessly advocating for women in the Middle East or supporting dissidents in Burma. Mrs. Bush’s compassion, sense of humor, grace and uncommon experience living through consequential times are the backdrop as she shares her incredible story of rising from small town beginnings in Texas to being at the center of world history. Her memoir, Spoken From the Heart, is a New York Times #1 best seller.

Read Me Differently:  Understanding learning disabilities in family life

Sarah Entine, MSW, Independent Filmmaker, Director of Read Me Differently

Endorsed by Edward M. Hallowell, Richard D. Lavoie, Dr. Larry Silver M.D., and Jon Kabat-Zinn…this special bay area screening of Read Me Differently will provide an in-depth look at dyslexia and ADHD and how these learning disabilities impact family dynamics. Viewers will watch a 56-minute documentary focusing on the filmmaker's experience growing up with misunderstood learning disabilities that spanned three generations in her family.  Upon seeing the film, the filmmaker will lead a Q&A that highlights the following objectives:

· Identifying the issues: how school based learning disabilities translate at home

· Addressing the issues: how to talk about learning disabilities at home

· Working with stress and anxiety: how mindfulness techniques can help parents and children

The film, Read Me Differently, will be available for purchase at this event!

Sarah Entine is an award-winning documentary film producer and director. Originally diagnosed with dyslexia in 1978, she only fully comprehended her disability 23 years later, at age 29. In 2009, she

completed her first documentary, Read Me Differently, a film that focuses on her experience growing up with misunderstood learning

disabilities that spanned three generations in her family. Prior to making the film, Sarah earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from Simmons College and has practiced vipassana (insight) meditation since

1998. Sarah has presented Read Me Differently at conferences across the country including twice at The International Dyslexia Association, The Learning Disability Association of America and The National

Association of Social Workers in Massachusetts. She has also given workshops with parent and student groups from Boston University to San Francisco State University. Her message addresses the need to increase awareness on how learning disabilities impact family relationships. Sarah has facilitated workshops and spoken to countless students, teachers, parents and service providers about her experience. In 2010,

Read Me Differently was selected for the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award, (past winners include Steven Spielberg, Ken Burns, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese). In the same year, Simmons School of Social work awarded Sarah with an Alumni Recognition Award. In 2011, Read Me Differently was chosen to screen at the Superfest International Disability Film Festival where the film received an Achievement Award. This fall, WGBH in Boston (a local PBS station) will be broadcasting the film.

Jack Hanna and His Animals
Naturalist, Adventurer, and Director of the Columbus Zoo

Jack Hanna, popular host of the hit television series, Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures, is one of America's most beloved naturalists and adventurers. Each week, Hanna takes millions of family viewers on exciting journeys to learn about animals and the places they live. What makes the series a success to a broad segment of viewers is Hanna's enthusiasm and wonderment with every new creature and experience he encounters. No intellectual pomp or indifference here• Jack Hanna is "every person's" television zoologist.
Hanna began to receive national attention after he became Director of the rundown Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio in 1978. He not only transformed the zoo into a model facility, but through his media savvy, made the Columbus Zoo a household name. He is a regular guest on shows including "Good Morning America," "Larry King Live," "The Late Show With David Letterman," "Hollywood Squares" and "The Maury Povich Show." He also makes countless personal appearances and speeches throughout the U.S.

The route to becoming a national celebrity began in his family's bathtub in Knoxville, Tennessee where he raised bluegills and then extended his menagerie to their backyard. After majoring in business in college, Hanna, with support from his wife, Suzi, started a pet shop and petting zoo, worked for a wildlife adventure company and directed a small Florida zoo. The couple's subsequent move to Columbus (with their three daughters) was the start of Jack Hanna's rising media star. Not only was he a regular on national talk shows, his autobiographical book, "Monkeys on the Interstate," was a hit in 1989. Other books, including one for children, "Let's Go To The Petting Zoo With Jungle Jack," followed.

Supporting Social Skill Development in Youth with Learning Disabilities and ADHD:  Current research and evidence-based practices

Melanie Berry, M.S., Doctoral Candidate, PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium

Developing healthy peer relationships is a critical aspect of every child’s development, including children with attention and learning differences. Too often these children have difficulties interacting with peers, leaving them vulnerable to peer rejection and isolation. This workshop will review the current research and teach you strategies to help these kids make and keep friends.

Melanie Berry has been the director of the Social Skills Program at UC Berkeley’s Blue Camp since 2008. A UC Berkeley alumna, she is currently a doctoral candidate at the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium, where she's focusing on child psychology. She has extensive experience working with children with a range of social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Her doctoral dissertation concerns the inclusion of children with autism spectrum disorders in community recreation settings.
